President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration has announced plans for a major overhaul of federal bureaucracy, beginning with an audit of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) spearheaded by Elon Musk. Musk confirmed the initiative on the social media platform X, posting, “Gonna happen.”

Audit to Target Waste and Inefficiency
While the IRS undergoes routine annual audits by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), these primarily ensure adherence to protocols rather than identifying inefficiency or waste. Musk’s audit, under the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aims to scrutinize the agency’s operations to uncover inefficiencies and reduce unnecessary expenditures.
IRS Expansion Under Biden Administration
The IRS has seen significant growth under the Biden administration. In May 2024, the agency requested an additional $20 billion to hire 14,000 more employees. This followed the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which allocated $80 billion for expanding the IRS’s operations, including hiring tens of thousands of new agents. Critics have argued that the agency’s expansion disproportionately targets working Americans.
Musk’s Role in Government Reform
Musk, alongside entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead DOGE. According to Trump, their mission is to “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” The initiative, described by Trump as a potential “Manhattan Project of our time,” is part of his administration’s broader effort to streamline government operations and enhance accountability.
Trump stated:
“We will drive out the massive waste and fraud which exists throughout our annual $6.5 Trillion Dollars of Government Spending. Elon and Vivek will make changes to the Federal Bureaucracy with an eye on efficiency and, at the same time, make life better for all Americans.”
Timeline and Objectives
DOGE’s work will begin on January 20, 2025, with a target completion date of July 4, 2026—America’s 250th Independence Day. By that time, the Trump administration hopes to deliver a “smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy,” as a hallmark achievement of the “Save America” movement.
This bold initiative reflects Trump’s vision of an accountable and efficient federal government, aiming to reshape its structure to better serve the American people.
