Tina Peters, a former county clerk for Mesa County in Colorado, was convicted for obstruction of government operations. She gained prominence for exposing vote fraud in the county during the 2020 elections.
Peters confirmed her April 10 sentence during the April 11 episode of Brannon Howse’s “Worldview Report.” She told the program host that a six-member jury convicted her of the charge, a lesser one compared to the criminal charges filed against her. Despite this, Peters remarked that being sentenced was a badge of honor.
According to NBC News, the former Mesa County clerk was sentenced to four months of home detention and 120 hours of community service with an ankle monitor. She was also ordered to pay a $750 fine for her attempts to prevent authorities from getting an iPad she allegedly used to record a video of a court hearing.
“I guess they think I’ve gone on the crime spree and they wanted to put me in jail. So, the judge ruled that I was to get four months of house arrest. I have to wear an ankle bracelet and I have 120 hours of community service. And then I had to pay restitution,” said Peters, who added that her attorney had filed an appeal which puts the sentence on hold.
According to the erstwhile county clerk, she was being played in a bad light by Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein – who was insisting on jail time for the 67-year-old. The judge refused to sentence Peters to jail, a move her counsel Harvey Steinberg lauded. “[We are] happy and relieved that the judge did not grant the district attorney’s request for a jail sentence,” he said.
The charge she was found guilty of and sentenced for on April 10 is separate from criminal charges she faces about allegations of her breach of the county’s secure election equipment in 2021. The alleged breach was done in an attempt to uncover the Centennial State’s rigged voting system. Peters has pleaded not guilty to seven felonies and four misdemeanor charges in that case, which is expected to go to trial in October. According to Peters, the charge she was convicted of is part of a “harassment campaign” carried out against her by local and state prosecutors. “This has the appearance of continued harassment,” she said in an email referencing Rubinstein and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Peters lost the election for the chairmanship of the Colorado Republic Party. But former State Rep. Dave Williams, who won the chairmanship, said he wants the former Mesa County clerk to play a role handling matters related to “election integrity.” Williams added that Peters hasn’t accepted a formal role with the Colorado GOP.
However, the Colorado GOP chair said it was beneficial that Peters has not yet accepted a role so she can focus on her legal defense efforts. In a text message to Colorado Politics, he expressed hope that Peters’ appeal is successful. Williams also praised the judge’s order as “measured, especially considering the district attorneys’ zealous desire to seek jail time for a minor offense.”
