Poll: Majority of voters oppose taxpayer funding for groups that provide abortions and gender transition treatments to minors

• A national poll of 1,600 registered voters found that 64 percent oppose taxpayer funding for organizations that provide abortions and gender transition treatments to minors, with 51 percent strongly opposed.
• Opposition is highest among Republicans (76 percent) and independents (71 percent), while Democrats are split evenly (44 percent support, 44 percent oppose). Over 60 percent of both men and women oppose such funding.

A new national poll finds that a strong majority of registered voters oppose taxpayer dollars going to organizations that perform abortions and provide gender transition treatments, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy, to minors.

The poll, conducted by Coordinating Research Council (CRC) Research for the Life Leadership Conference, surveyed 1,600 registered voters nationwide from June 3 to 8. According to the results, 64 percent of voters oppose taxpayer funding for any organization that provides such treatments to minors. More than half of respondents (51 percent) say they “strongly oppose” it.

Republicans and independents are particularly unified in their opposition: 76 percent of Republicans and 71 percent of independents disapprove of taxpayer funds supporting such organizations. Democrats are evenly divided, with 44 percent in support and 44 percent opposed. Opposition was consistent across gender lines as well, with over 60 percent of both men and women opposing such funding.

When voters were explicitly informed that Planned Parenthood provides gender transition treatments to minors, opposition to taxpayer funding for the organization rose to 60 percent, while 32 percent still expressed support. Among Republicans, opposition jumped to 79 percent, with 61 percent of independents agreeing. A slim majority of Democrats (51 percent) still support funding under those circumstances.

The survey also gauged public opinion on whether organizations that facilitate abortions for minors without parental notification or consent should receive federal funding. Sixty-seven percent of voters said they oppose funding for such organizations, with 52 percent strongly opposed, while 27 percent supported it. Most Republicans (79 percent) and independents (69 percent) were against it, and for the first time in the survey, a majority of Democrats (53 percent) also expressed opposition.

Only the self-identified liberals supported such taxpayer funding, with 53 percent in favor.

David Bereit, executive director of the Life Leadership Conference, said the results show that the public is drawing a clear line.

“The overwhelming majority of Americans strongly oppose their tax dollars bankrolling organizations that target minors for irreversible, sterilizing sex-change treatments and abortions – especially without parental involvement or consent,” Bereit said. “Taxpayer funding should uplift American families, not Planned Parenthood – an organization actively undermining parents and harming children. Americans are sending an unmistakable message to Congress: No more forced taxpayer funding of abortion and sex-change hormone providers.”

Trump admin moves to eliminate funding for abortion and sex change for minors

The poll was conducted as the federal government moves to eliminate funding for these practices.

This June, the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance released its version of the proposed budget reconciliation bill, keeping intact a controversial provision that would block abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, from receiving federal Medicaid dollars. The text of the Senate bill includes a decade-long prohibition on Medicaid payments to what it defines as a “prohibited entity.” That includes any provider “primarily engaged in family planning services, reproductive health and related medical care and provides for abortions.” Exceptions are included for abortions in cases of rape, incest or when the pregnancy endangers the mother’s life.

“No federal funds that are considered direct spending and provided to carry out a State plan under title XIX of the Social Security Act or a waiver of such a plan shall be used to make payments to a prohibited entity for items and services furnished during the 10-year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act, including any payments made directly to the prohibited entity or under a contract or other arrangement between a State and a covered organization,” the proposal read.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump signed an executive order halting all federal funding for transgender treatments for minors shortly after taking office earlier this year.
