President-elect Donald Trump is set to name Stephen Miller, his top immigration advisor during his first term, as the deputy chief of staff for policy in the coming days.
Miller, who served as a senior adviser and lead speechwriter to Trump during his first administration, is known for his hard-line stance on immigration. Miller played a pivotal role in establishing restrictive measures implemented through executive orders, circumventing legislation but triggering extensive legal battles, which Miller acknowledged would likely continue in the upcoming second term.
As Trump’s top immigration advisor, Miller is also the one behind the largest mass deportation plan for undocumented immigrants in American history. He even reiterated in an interview on Fox News, a few days before the 2024 presidential election, that this will start “as soon as he takes the oath of office.” During the interview, he claimed that a second Trump administration would increase deportations by tenfold, targeting over one million removals per year.
This record, along with his hardline stance on immigration, has made him the perfect candidate for the role of deputy chief of staff for policy. Although both Trump and Miller remain silent about the potential appointment, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance has confirmed the news on X on Nov. 12. (Related: Trump congratulates himself on election performance, calling it “a magnificent victory for the American people.”)
“This is another fantastic pick by the president. Congrats @StephenM!” Vance wrote on X, along with a retweet from Eric Daugherty, an assistant news director at Florida’s Voice.
“#BREAKING: President-elect Donald Trump selects Stephen Miller as his deputy chief of staff for policy – CNN. Miller is known as a hardliner on migration,” Daugherty wrote.
Miller is expected to have an expanded role in the incoming administration, shaping more immigration policies and other key agenda items for Trump.
Aside from Miller, Trump officially named campaign manager Susie Wiles as his chief of staff, former Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Tom Homan as his “border czar” and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as his ambassador to the United Nations.
“I am pleased to announce that the former ICE director and stalwart on border control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our nation’s borders (“The Border Czar”), including, but not limited to, the southern border, the northern border, all maritime and aviation security,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I’ve known Tom for a long time and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all deportation of illegal aliens back to their country of origin. Congratulations to Tom. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long awaited for, job.”
Regarding Stefanik’s nomination, Trump described her as an “incredibly strong, tough and smart America First fighter” with exceptional credentials. Therefore, “she will be an incredible Ambassador to the United Nations.”
