The Democrats appear to be ready to hit the panic button as the November 2024 election approaches.
According to The Hill, Joe Biden is trailing Donald Trump in polls of several battleground states, underscoring concerns that the incumbent president’s message isn’t gaining traction with swing voters.” This dismal performance in surveys, the outlet added, “suggests … Biden is weaker than he was four years ago.”
“Many Democrats thought Trump’s legal problems would submarine him, but the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision … ruled in his favor on a Fourteenth Amendment case. Other high-profile trials have been delayed, raising doubts about whether they will reach verdicts before Election Day.” (Related: SCOTUS: States CANNOT REMOVE Trump from their election ballots based on 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.)
David Axelrod, erstwhile senior political advisor to former President Barack Obama, commented on the development during an appearance on CNN. According to him, Trump’s court battles have allowed him to sell his strength as a candidate.
“All these indictments, all of these lawsuits and so on have given him a chance to look indomitable, strong [and] resilient,” Axelrod said. “That’s actually in some ways helped.”
The Hill further noted that “Trump and his allies in Congress celebrated the decision as a major victory and tried to use it as ammunition against his opponents. While Democrats generally expected the Supreme Court to rule to keep Trump on the ballot, the unanimous decision underscored how weak the legal arguments were against the former president.”
In contrast, the 81-year-old incumbent appears to be in free-fall mode based on the results of two opinion polls. The first poll conducted by Bloomberg News and Morning Consult showed Biden trailing Trump in several critical states – including Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada and Wisconsin.
In those seven states, 48 percent of voters said they would back Trump and only 43 percent of voters said they would back Biden.
The second poll conducted by the New York Times and Siena College showed Trump with 48 percent of support among registered voters nationwide. Biden trailed by five points at 43 percent. Moreover, a majority of respondents in this second poll said they think the U.S. economy is in poor shape and 47 percent of voters expressed strong disapproval of how Biden does his job as president.
Ross K. Baker, a professor emeritus of political science at Rutgers University in New Jersey, remarked that the political picture is looking bleak for the Democrats.
“The president has not presented particularly well. He’s showing his age. The Senate map is very unfavorable to the Democrats,” he said.
Democratic strategist Steve Jarding agreed with Baker, noting that Democratic lawmakers “should” be worried about the emerging political picture.
“If you’re Trump and his team, you go, ‘Wow, I’ll take this any day of the week,'” he said. Jarding also compared the former president’s relatively strong political position – as evidenced by his wins during Super Tuesday and earlier primaries – with Biden’s faltering effort to get his message out to voters.
